Who modeled philanthropy for you?
My mother never stopped pushing me to do more. She wanted me to reach my full potential so I had the best chance to positively impact the lives of others. She told me often, “You can do anything and I expect you to do everything.” She was an engaged single mother, a leader in her profession, a caretaker to my grandmother, and yet always prioritized our weekly volunteer times at St. Jude’s, the women’s shelter, and tithing. Despite having only a short time with her, she has had the greatest impact on how I view opportunities to create change in my community.
Why do you support Duke, and how do you decide what areas to support?
I served as a graduate student basketball usher for seven seasons, including three seasons as the head usher. Over those years I built strong relationships within Duke University Athletics. The relationships I built years ago laid the foundation for and continue to fuel my desire to help enrich the lives of our student-athletes as they strive to be champions in the classroom and at the highest level of their sport.
What are your greatest hopes for Duke?
I hope we continue to inspire the next generation of critical thinkers, life-time learners, and visionary leaders to use their strengths to contribute to society.
